Baby Skin Conditions
There are few infants who manage to get through their first years of life without suffering from some type of skin condition. The most common – nappy rash, cradle cap, eczema and baby acne – aren’t harmful but they can be unpleasant for your child and also unsightly.
Nappy rash is a type of dermatitis caused by your baby’s bottom being exposed to wet or dirty nappies but it can also occur when nappies are changed too frequently. So really you can’t win. Nappy rash is just as commonly caused by your baby’s sensitive skin reacting to soap and detergent residue, powders and creams and common ingredients found in nappy wipes.
Another type of dermatitis that is common in a baby’s first few months is cradle cap, which causes thick, yellow crusts on the scalp. It’s caused by inflammation of the sebaceous glands, which help waterproof the skin. Cradle cap will usually clear up by itself and if it does continue after then, it may be a sign of eczema.
Eczema is thought to affect about 10-20% of all children. Heat, dryness and clothing can aggravate eczema in children. Most often these children have very dry skin. Keeping your child cool, well moisturised and using natural fibres such as cotton and silk may help relieve the symptoms of eczema.
Baby acne can occur when a child is just a few weeks old and may have been triggered by the mother’s hormones before birth. The skin may look red and rough and they can have black heads and white heads. Gentle cleansing with a mild soap can help with the symptoms of baby acne.
Our Pharmaoil Skin Therapy is a perfect emollient for your baby. It can be used regularly to keep your baby's skin moisturised. It will not block your baby’s pores and being 100% natural and fragrance free, it does not contain some common irritating ingredients. It can also be used on your child for long periods of time.
For extra strength, try Pharmaoil Zinc therapy, which combines our Pharmaoil base oils with zinc, an important trace element for your body that activates more than 100 of your skin’s enzymes, while also being naturally anti-bacterial.
Finally, our sensitive soap is a gentle cleanser for your child’s skin, being pH balanced and 100% natural.
As always, we recommend that you test all Pharmaoil products on a small patch of skin when using them for the first time. We also recommend that you see a doctor if you suspect a serious skin condition or have any concerns.
